"Musical Balconies" and its companion piece, "Shutter Garden," were inspired by news photos of quarantined Italians singing from their balconies early in the pandemic.
Musical Balconies is a double-sided representation of a street scene. Tiers of balconies ascend to rooftops on the front side, while the back side suggests a city wall with a huge mural of medieval musicians above a "sotoportego," or pedestrian tunnel, leading to the street. All the imagery is of music and musicians.
