A celebration of the architectural details of Venice. Stairways descend from whimsical chimney pots past arched windows with green shutters and flower boxes and laundry hanging from balconies, down to ancient gates opening on the canal where gondolas and speedboats bob among tiny shining fish.
This piece plays with depth: stairs and boats project forward from the picture plane, while we glimpse rooms tucked behind windows and balconies, and windows and doors on the back wall hint at more hidden rooms. The corner balconies on the angled sides of the piece, dangling gondola, and irregular skyline convey the unframeable, infinitely reflected, shimmering mirage quality of the city hovering between water and sky.
Four magnetic, battery-operated LED lamps can be turned on to cast light and shadows through the scene and illuminate the two tiny street shrines. See how many little cats you can find perched on railings and exploring the rooftops!
