Somewhere Near Ninth Street

Project type

Wall-hanging mixed-media assemblage

Date

2025

Second in a series on women artists, between The Ladies' Art Museum and White Cube/ Contemporary Women. This piece highlights a few major midcentury artists, drawing on the books Ninth Street Women by Mary Gabriel and Women of Abstract Expressionism ed. Joan Marter. The figures represent Louise Nevelson, Lee Krasner, Grace Hartigan, Helen Frankenthaler, Joan Mitchell, Elaine de Kooning, and poet/curator Frank O'Hara, among reproductions of paintings and sculptures by these and other midcentury artists-- including three husbands of the women featured. The architectural setting echoes the NYC building where the Ninth Street show was held in 1951. (Blog post to come.)
