Postage Stamp Portrait Gallery (sold)

Project type

Mixed-media assemblage

Date

2025

The postage stamp as wall art is an old dollhouse trope. Here postage stamps depicting famous paintings are brought together in an art museum, with historical portraits and artifacts on the lower level, and a special exhibit of Abstract Expressionist and New York School paintings on the upper floor. Hidden behind the elaborate scrollwork on top is a roof garden where a grandfather has taken young children to let off steam on the grass. Other figures scattered throughout represent the cleaning staff, curators, guards, and visitors. The grand style of a traditional museum building is evoked with pillars, glass tiles, decorative ceilings, and stone urns of flowers.
